LIVING INSTALLATION

LIVING INSTALLATION / De Anima

[In the Shadow of Trees]

Extended until March 26th.

From February 25th, just before entering the exhibition In the Shadow of Trees, you can discover the installation Noir d'encre by the collective De Anima. This project is the continuation of Mycelia 753, exhibited at Ada Ventura.

In a desire to address the environmental issue within the photographic practice, Hangar invites the collective De Anima with an original and innovative project: Noir d’encre.

Noir d’encre combines three aims: to re-use prints produced for a previous exhibition; to experiment with natural photographic processes; and to demonstrate the ability of the living to take over from the artificial. Noir d’encre is an evolving and living creation, featuring a series of photographs and two films: Mycelia 753 (film screened until 27th February at Ada Ventura) and a video made using a microscope to illustrate the way “inky cap” mushroom ink propagates through photo prints at cellular level.

The photographs on display here are “blue back” prints in which a capillary network has been inlaid manually. The paper is meticulously reworked and once processed, it receives a black mushroom ink, which is absorbed by the capillaries and gently modifies the image. The black ink is produced by processing “Ink-black coprin” mushrooms, harvested from gardens in Brussels by the collective.

Noir d’encre both illustrates the process of survival used by mycelium in nature and provides a reflection on the pollution caused by the photographic production (solvents, chemicals, paper whitener, etc.). The work has a life of its own and the mushroom, even when liquefied, persists over time and continues to live by colonising the paper.
