Borderline
The Belgian photographer Paul D'Haese presents the exhibition Borderline, in collaboration with Hangar Photo Art Center.
Paul D'Haese created this series during hikes along the coast of northern France. The artist focused on the border between the built-up country and the open sea. The coast of northern France is marked by history: the Atlantic Wall, the liberation, the refugee camps. In this spirit and in a non-documentary way, the artist has studied all kinds of interactions: that between land and sea, the solid and the troubled, the inside and the outside, the enclosed and the liberated.
Paul D'Haese has linked these themes to the search for identity, with "borderline" personality disorder as an extreme.
“Het bestaan zelf is maar mogelijk in haar begrenzing. Door het sterven, door de beperking in de tijd definieert zich het leven. Door onze lichamelijke aanwezigheid zijn we een zelf in de ruimte.
De grens geeft de eigenheid aan, de kanteling tussen bekend en verschillend. Het is de lijn vanwaar het verlangen naar het andere vertrekt, waaruit de verwondering en verrassing ontstaan.
Deze afscheiding toont zich op het land vaak door zogenaamde natuurlijke grenzen, zoals zeeën, rivieren en bergen die de doorgang vertraagden. Deze grenzen zijn veranderlijk in de geschiedenis, ze zijn bevochten, veroverd, verloren en beweend. Bij wijlen zijn ze helemaal vergeten. Om de herinnering te verstevigen construeert de mens bouwwerken, monumenten, nederzettingen, vestingen. Zij zijn randfenomenen, afboordingen, getuigen van de eindigheid. Zij doen uitkijken naar het vreemde, soms met angst, soms met begeren. Vaak zijn het oorden van passionele dromen, van bevrijding uit geketende noodlottigheid, van hunkering naar oneindigheid. Soms zijn het plekken van gastvrijheid, uitnodigend en open. Soms zijn het plaatsen van tijdelijkheid, springplanken naar de overkant, oorden van niet-willen-zijn. Soms zijn het symbolen van eeuwigheid, van voortdurend willen bewijzen van eigenheid. Meestal wordt de mens gespleten tussen deze tegenstrijdige driften, het behouden of het veranderen, het nestelen of het ontdekken, het bewortelen of het uitzaaien.
Aan de grens toont zich deze fundamentele tweespalt ten volle, omdat het object van begeerte rechtstreeks in zicht is. In de verte. Schijnbaar voor het grijpen.” - Dirk De Wachter
What is in the exhibition?
The exhibition brings together 169 photographs by Paul D’Haese.
A journey of 350 kilometers, and a project made on a period of 3 years, from Bray-Dunes to Le Havre. With his camera, the artist has traveled through some 50 villages and towns, first by car, then by bicycle, and finally on foot.

The exhibition comes with a photo box.
The box contains 10 prints (14 x 21 cm each) of the series Borderline.
