The Nature of Things
Claudia Jaguaribe, the Brazilian photographer, in collaboration with Hangar Photo Art Center presents the exhibition The Nature of things. With her contemporary eye, Claudia takes us to Brazilian lands through an immersive photographic exhibition. Her poetics but also desolated images shown the different facets and antagonisms of Brazil. Claudia’s work doesn’t intend to document the present, but of casting a reflection upon it from images that talked about the relationship of human being with nature.
What’s in the exhibition?
The exhibition englobes ten years of photo works. Showing with a realistic perspective and an artistic sensibility a joyful but worry contemplation.
Claudia Jaguaribe expands the medium of photography by experimenting with different materials and creating sculptures and three-dimensional objects through a delicate work that has one intention: a call to protect our nature.

“The concept that structures this exhibition is the desire to bring a visual comprehension of the extremes we face in Brazil in relation to our environment. Brazil is a huge continental size country, 63 % of its territory maintains the natural forests. Despite this extremely favorable context we face major man made environmental disasters and forever expanding cities.
In this complex environment we can observe many mixed situations where people, heavy polluting industry, preservation efforts and wild animals coexist. The tensions and outcomes of this scenario has been my interest for a along time. The different series I’m presenting are part of this on going research.
The first images dates from 2009 and the last ones were produced this year specially for this exhibition. Documenting and creating images of the relationship between man, nature and culture makes the base of the work.
The immersive installations in which they are to be seen bring the sense of the power of nature and the destructiveness inherent in economic progress. Looking into these issues from the point of art helps us create a sense of purpose and responsabilty towards nature.” - Claudia Jaguaribe
